Why 3D print your desk clamp?

SIM Racing is not cheap, and it helps to save a buck where you can, even if its just to put that buck somewhere else in your setup. This is one of our contributions to helping SIM racers save just a bit of money.

If you have a Moza wheelbase (R12 and R12V2) or a Fanatec DD which uses tnuts, but don't want to pay the $50 plus shipping to use your wheel this may be a good option for you, an alternative to Moza Racing's official clamp. Keep in mind the Moza desk clamp is more adjustable and I'm sure it's a nice product. The total cost for this solution is about $12 if you already have screws for the wheel base, not bad for a flex free mounting solution.

Recommended Print Settings

The bracket is 3D printed, so you will need a printer or a friend with a printer. Just download the file using the link below. I used ABS but you can use PETG if that's what you have available. Just stay away from PLA. PLA has a tendency to creep, a material phenomenon that I heard best described as the "materials natural inclination to run away from its responsibilities" by J.E. Gordon in his book 'The New Science of Strong Materials." In short you don't want things to warp over time or screws to get loose. 

I provided the sliced file in this blog, but here are the important settings I used with my particular 3D Printer:

5 walls with a .6mm nozzle (7-8 walls with a .4mm nozzle)

20% rectilinear infill

Preheated at 100C for 15 min

Print the brackets in the orientation I have shown here, you will want to do this to prevent layer separations from the massive torques that are applied by the wheelbase. This made for a very rigid, overbuilt bracket that I have no concerns with. 

Assembly and required hardware

These brackets get secured to the wheel base using four m6-1 x 12mm long screws. If you don't have any handy I've linked some at the end of this article (more than you need but they are really useful in this hobby).

Now to secure the bracket to the desk I used these cheap C-clamps I found on Amazon. The important thing about these is that they have a long reach, this help prevent the wheel base tipping forward. The clamps themselves are not very rigid, they tend to splay apart as they're tightened, that's okay just keep tightening until you are happy with the hold.
